‘Both Sides Now’ is an iconic late ‘60s song by Joni Mitchell. First performed by Judy Collins, the song is about feeling empowered, after looking at life from both sides. The 1969 version by Mitchell herself has an innocence and joy about it, as the 26 year old Mitchell was still so young.

This arrangement is unique to the arranger, but aims to capture the tone of the more reflective and poignant ballad version she recorded at a more experienced and world-weary 57. Both Youtube videos are below.

This arrangement itself was devised for a show about living with HIV. It was intended to evoke the wisdom, strength, resilience and honesty of those who have survived and flourished while living with a life-threatening disease. It also contains a positive message about ‘feeling proud’ to say I love you ‘right out loud’.

It starts and ends with a single tenor or Baritone soloist, and becomes more joyous, pastoral and expansive in the middle.
